Pax-6 is a transcription factor expressed during embryonic development, mainly in eyes and brain. Pax-6 has 2 DNA-binding domains, the paired domain (PD), and the paired-type homeodomain (HD). There are at least three different protein isoforms resulting from alternative spicing, Pax-6, Pax-6(5a), and Pax-6(?PD) isoforms. Pax-6 contains a N-terminal paired domain, a linker, a homeodomain and a proline/serine/threonine (P/S/T)-rich C-terminal domain. Pax-6(5a) results from the alternative splicing of exon 5a resulting in a 14 residue insertion in the paired domain which alters the DNA binding specificity of the transcription factor. The Pax-6(?PD) isoforms lack the paired domain. They originate from 3 start codons and have molecular masses of 43, 33, or 32kDa. This pAb is useful in studying brain, neuronal and olfactory development in higher eukaryotes.
