Target Description
Membrane-associated guanylate kinases (MAGUKs) are a large family of scaffold proteins that play essential roles in tissue development, cell-cell communication, cell polarity control, and cellular signal transduction. MAGUKs act as key scaffolds in surface complexes containing receptors, adhesion proteins, and various signaling molecules and play key roles in cell-cell intercommunication. The neuronal synapse is a prime example of this, where the MAGUK proteins play a critical role in organizing both pre and post-synaptic proteins into functional assemblies. Major synaptic MAGUK proteins include PSD-95, SAP102, SAP97, PSD-93, CASK, and MAGIs. Together, they play roles in both synaptic development and in synaptic plasticity.
