Bio Background |
This gene encodes a highly conserved nonhistone protein, which is a member of the heterochromatin protein family. Theprotein is enriched in the heterochromatin and associated withcentromeres. The protein has a single N-terminal chromodomain whichcan bind to histone proteins via methylated lysine residues, and aC-terminal chromo shadow-domain (CSD) which is responsible for thehomodimerization and interaction with a number ofchromatin-associated nonhistone proteins. The encoded product isinvolved in the formation of functional kinetochore throughinteraction with essential kinetochore proteins. The gene has apseudogene located on chromosome 3. Multiple alternatively splicedvariants, encoding the same protein, have been identified. |
