NF-kappaB (nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells) is a transcription factor that controls the transcription of many genes that are associated with immuno-response, anti-apoptosis, neuroplasticity and memory. There are five NF-kB proteins in mammals: RelA(NF-kB-p65), RelB, c-Rel, NF-kB (NF-kB-p105), and NF-kB2 (NF-kB-p100). They form a variety of homodimers and heterodimers, each of which activates its own distinctive set of genes. P65 has been shown to be involved with DNA binding. The phosphorylation of p65 at Ser468 is inducible by TNF. The phosphorylation mediates p65 ubiquitination and the termination of related gene expression.
