Stat3, a member of the Stat family, was originally found as the acute phase response factor, a transcription factor activated by IL-6 and its receptor in liver cells. Stat molecules can be activated by receptor-associated tyrosine kinases through phosphorylation on a single tyro-sine residue. After phosphorylation, Stat proteins can form dimers, translocate into the nucleus and activate gene expression by binding to specific response elements in the promoter of target genes. Recently, it has been found that many signals relay their effects through Stat3, implicating it in growth, differentiation, survival and apoptosis.
