Somatostatin is secreted not only by cells of the hypothalamus but also by delta cells of stomach, intestine, and pancreas. It binds to somatostatin receptors. Somatostatin was first discovered in hypothalamic extracts and identified as a hormone that inhibited secretion of growth hormone.
