Specificity:
Is specific for human C-reactive protein (CRP) a calcium-binding acute phase reactant belonging to the pentraxin family which is secreted into the plasma by the liver in response to cytokine stimulation. In addition to binding to phosphocholine residues CRP can bind to other autologous and extrinsic ligands on targets including damaged cell membranes ribonucleoprotein particles apoptotic cells and constituents of micro-organisms and may activate the classical complement pathway through C1q recognition making CRP a factor in a variety of host defense mechanisms. Levels of plasma CRP are significantly increased during the acute phase response tissue injury and infection and can be used diagnostically as a marker of inflammation disease progress and risk assessment of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Recommended Secondary Antibodies: Rabbit Anti Goat IgG (Fc)
Function:
Displays several functions associated with host defense: it promotes agglutination bacterial capsular swelling phagocytosis and complement fixation through its calcium-dependent binding to phosphorylcholine. Can interact with DNA and histones and may scavenge nuclear material released from damaged circulating cells. Cofactor: Binds 2 calcium ions per subunit. Subunit structureHomopentamer. Pentaxin (or pentraxin) have a discoid arrangement of 5 non-covalently bound subunits. Subcellular locationSecreted. Tissue specificityFound in plasma.
Induction:
The concentration of CRP in plasma increases greatly during acute phase response to tissue injury infection or other inflammatory stimuli. It is induced by IL-1 and IL-6.
Miscellaneous:
This protein owes its name to its ability precipitate pneumococcal C-polysaccharide in the presence of calcium. Sequence similaritiesBelongs to the pentaxin family. Contains 1 pentaxin domain.
