Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) survives treatment with broad-spectrumbeta-lactam antibiotics including penicillin, methicillin, and cephalosporins. Previously, mostMRSA infections occurred in hospitals or other health care settings, such as nursing homes anddialysis centers and were known as “health care-associated MRSA” or HA-MRSA. Older adultsand people with weakened immune systems were most at risk of contracting HA-MRSA. Morerecently, another type of MRSA has occurred among otherwise healthy people in the widercommunity. This form, “community-associated MRSA”, or CA-MRSA, causes serious skin andsoft tissue infections and a potentially lethal form of pneumonia.
