Mayaro virus (MAYV) is a arthropod-borne RNA virus belonging to the Togaviridaefamily, Alphavirus genus. It is closely related to other arboviruses like Chikungunya andRoss River virus. Originally discovered in Trinidad in 1954, MAYV is transmitted tohumans primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes, particularly the Aedesspecies. The virus causes Mayaro fever, a febrile illness with symptoms resemblingthose of dengue and chikungunya, including fever, joint pain, and rash. Whiletraditionally considered restricted to South America, recent reports of MAYV cases inother regions indicate its potential for geographic expansion. The disease burden ofMayaro fever has been underreported and underestimated, and its emergence highlightsthe importance of monitoring and understanding the ecology and epidemiology ofemerging arboviruses for effective public health management.
