3, 4 - methylenedioxymethamphetamine, also known as MDMA, ecstasy, or molly, is asynthetic psychoactive substance that alters mood and perception. Developed in theearly 20th century, MDMA later gained popularity for its use in psychotherapy beforebecame associated with recreational settings. Differing from other amphetaminesstructurally, attachment of a methylenedioxy group, it can produce the effects of bothamphetamines and hallucinogens. Its primary mechanism of action involves increasingthe release of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in the brain, leading toheightened mood and increased energy. Diagnostic testing for MDMA use is oftenconducted through urine tests that can detect the presence of the drug or itsmetabolites. Misuse of MDMA is a concern due to its potential for adverse effects, including dehydration, hyperthermia, and serotonin syndrome. Long-term use may alsobe associated with memory and cognitive impairments.
