Powassan virus (POWV) is a single-stranded RNA virus that is a member of theFlaviviridae family within the genus Flavivirus. This virus is transmitted to humansprimarily through the bite of infected ticks, particularly Ixodes scapularis and Ixodescookei. Powassan virus is classified into two distinct lineages: the Powassan (POWV)lineage and the deer tick virus (DTV) lineage. Powassan virus infection can result insevere neurological symptoms, including encephalitis and meningitis. While the overalldisease burden is relatively low compared to other tick-borne illnesses, the virus hasgained attention due to its potential for rapid onset of severe illness and its associationwith fatal outcomes. Powassan virus is primarily distributed in North America and partsof Russia, and its emergence and the increasing incidence of cases underscore theimportance of continued surveillance and research for understanding its epidemiologyand potential public health impact.
