Phencyclidine, commonly known as PCP, is a dissociative anesthetic drug that wasinitially developed for medical use but later discontinued due to its adverse effects. PCPdisrupts the normal functioning of the central nervous system by blockingN-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, which are involved in the transmission ofexcitatory signals in the brain. As a result, PCP induces hallucinations, distortedperceptions of reality, and a sense of detachment from the environment. The drug canbe ingested orally, snorted, smoked, or injected. Diagnostic testing for PCP abusetypically involves urine analysis, as PCP and its metabolites can be detected in urinesamples.
