Recombinant Human Matrix Metalloproteinase-12/MMP-12 produced by transfected human cells is a secreted protein with sequence (Gly106-Cys470) of Human MMP-12 fused with a polyhistidine tag at the C-terminus.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc & calcium dependent endo-peptidases which degrade components of the extracellular matrix (ECM). MMP-12 (macrophage elastase) is found in macrophages & its expression can be induced by cytokines. MMP 12 plays essential roles in various physiological processes & pathological processes. MMP-12 is responsible for cleavage of plasminogen to angiotensin, which has an angiostatic effect. It may be part in tissue injury & remodeling & has significant elastolytic activity. MMP-12 is related to the pathogenesis of aortic aneurysms & in the development of pulmonary emphysemaMMP-12 is a potent proinflammatory & oncogenic molecule MMP-12 up-regulation plays a critical role in emphysema to lung cancer transition that is facilitated by inflammation.
