Localization:	Secreted IL-15 (14-15 kD) is a member of the four alpha-helical bundle family of cytokines. It is very similar to IL-2 except that IL-15 has an IL-15 alpha receptor subunit (ref 1). IL-15 plays an important role in the growth and differentiation of T and B lymphocytes natural killer cells macrophages and monocytes as well as activation of a number of important intracellular signaling molecules (ref 2). This implies that IL-15could be essential for the immune responses allograft rejection and the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases (ref 3).
Function:	Cytokine that stimulates the proliferation of T-lymphocytes. Stimulation by IL-15 requires interaction of IL-15 with components of IL-2R including IL-2R beta and probably IL-2R gamma but not IL-2R alpha.
Subcellular Location:	Isoform IL15-S48AA: Secreted.
Subcellular Location:	Isoform IL15-S21AA: Cytoplasm. Nucleus. Note=IL15-S21AA is not secreted but rather is stored intracellularly appearing in the nucleus and cytoplasmic components.
Tissue Specificity:	Most abundant in placenta and skeletal muscle. It is also detected in the heart lung liver and kidney. IL15-S21AA is preferentially expressed in tissues such as testis and thymus.
Similarity:	Belongs to the IL-15/IL-21 family.
