Localization:	Secreted The IL12 p40 chain can form a novel cytokine (IL23) when it joins a p19 chain. IL12 and IL23 show overlapping (and some distinct) biological characteristics. Overexpression of IL12 p40 may be involved in a variety of immunopathologies including Crohn\' s disease.
Function:	Cytokine that can act as a growth factor for activated T and NK cells enhance the lytic activity of NK/lymphokine-activated Killer cells and stimulate the production of IFN-gamma by resting PBMC.
Subunit:	Heterodimer with IL12B; disulfide-linked. The heterodimer is known as interleukin IL-12.
Subcellular Location:	Secreted.
