It inhibits the binding and functional activity of various agonists, with a binding Ki of 0.13 nM for the human CB1R in vitro. Taranabant reduces abdominal pain and increases intestinal transit in mice. It was discovered by Merck & Co. In October 2008, Merck discontinued the phase III clinical trials due to high level of central side effects, mainly depression and anxiety.
