Description
Alpha-Synuclein is a 140 amino acid protein that is implicated in Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia, and multiple system atrophy. It is mainly produced in the brain, but is also present at low levels in many other tissues. The protein contains 3 domains, a N-terminal amphipathic domain, a central hydrophobic domain which contains the NAC region (non-amyloid-beta component), involved in proetin aggregation, and a C-terminal proline-rich domain. At least 3 isoforms of alpha-Synuclein are generated by alternative splicing, the most common form being the full length 1-140.
