Myelin basic protein (MBP) is involved in nerves myelination, and induces immune reactivity in multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the CNS. SMI 99 reacts with the sequence Ala-Ser-Asp-Tyr-Lys-Ser in position 131-136 of human MBP. The antibody detects MBP from most mammalian species. Pig and chicken MBP do not react and guinea pig MBP has slight reactivity. SMI 99 does not react with the 14 kDa form of rat MBP. SMI 99 detects developing and adult myelin, developing oligodendrocytes and distinguishes oligodendrocytes from astrocytes, microglia, neurons and other cells in brain sections.
