Cathepsin K (CTSK) is a crucial member of the tissue protease family and falls under the category of cysteine proteases. Initially, it issynthesized as an inactive form called procathepsin K and undergoes further processing to transform into its mature enzyme state. Similar toother proteins in this family, cathepsin K possesses a highly conserved structure resembling papain, along with an active site that remainsconserved as well. Its discovery can be traced back to osteoclasts, and subsequent studies have established its correlation with variouscancer types, such as prostate cancer, breast cancer, bone cancer, lung cancer, and kidney cancer. These research findings have propelledthe investigation into developing targeted drugs that selectively inhibit cathepsin K.
