Bio Background	This gene encodes a member of the neurotrophic tyrosinekinase receptor (NTKR) family. This kinase is a membrane-boundreceptor that, upon neurotrophin binding, phosphorylates itself andmembers of the MAPK pathway. The presence of this kinase leads tocell differentiation and may play a role in specifying sensoryneuron subtypes. Mutations in this gene have been associated withcongenital insensitivity to pain, anhidrosis, self-mutilatingbehavior, mental retardation and cancer. Alternate transcriptionalsplice variants of this gene have been found, but only three havebeen characterized to date.
