Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are a diverse group of small, non-enveloped, icosahedral dsDNA-based viruses that have a diameter of 52–55 nm. More than 100 different human papillomavirus types have been characterized as either high risk or low risk according to their association with cancer. Low-risk HPVs mostly cause no disease. However, a few low-risk HPV types such as HPV 6 and 11 can cause 90% of warts or papilloma on or around the genitals, anus, mouth or throat which rarely develop into cancer. High-risk HPVs can cause several types of cancer. There are about 14 high-risk HPV types including HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, and 68. Two of these, HPV 16 and 18, are responsible for most HPV-related cancers. Clone CAMVIR-1 reacts with a 56 kDa major capsid L1 protein of HPV 16, which presents in a predominantly nuclear location. This clone reacts very strongly with biopsy specimens containing HPV 16 or 33, but not or very weak HPV 6 or 11. This clone cross-reacts with HPV 37.
