The alpha subunit has cell adhesive properties. The beta subunit is involved in cell signaling. Mucin-1 is over expressed in epithelial tumors such as breast or ovarian cancer and also in non-epithelial tumor cells.A At least 10 isoforms are produced by alternative splicing.
