Human Alpha fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein that is normally only produced in the fetus during its development. Human Alpha fetoprotein (AFP)measurement during pregnancy has been useful to detect certain abnormalities specifically if high levels of Human Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) are found in amniotic fluid it can indicate a developmental defect in the baby. Human Alpha fetoprotein (AFP) is measured in pregnant women, using maternal blood or amniotic fluid, as a screening test for a subset developmental abnormalities, principally open neural tube defects. Human Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) appears in human of 4-week old fetuses, reaches its highest levels in the 12th-16th week of gestation, dropping Human Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) to trace amounts after birth.
