Thrombopoietin (TPO/THPO), also known as Leukemia Virus Oncogene Ligand or Megakaryocyte Growth and Development Factor, is a glycoprotein hormone produced mainly by the liver and the kidney that regulates the production of platelets by the bone marrow. THPO stimulates the production and differentiation of megakaryocytes, the bone marrow cells that fragment into large numbers of platelets. Megakaryocytopoiesis is the cellular development process that leads to platelet production. THPO is a humoral growth factor that is necessary for megakaryocyte proliferation and maturation, as well as for thrombopoiesis. THPO is the ligand for MLP/C_MPL, the product of Myeloproliferative Leukemia Virus Oncogene.
