This polyclonal antibody, which reacts with rat IFN-gamma, was generated using, E. coli, -expressed rat IFN-gamma as an immunogen. INF-gamma (Interferon-gamma) is a cytokine that is produced by TH2-like CD4+ T cells. It is engaged in inflammatory response against invading infectious agents. Overreaction to infectious disease and overproduction of INF-gamma could lead to immunopathology, a process very similar to autoimmune response. Therefore, anti-INF-gamma can play a role in limiting the intensity and/or duration of toxic immune response. This is seen as anti-INF-gamma antibodies can interfere with the generation of cytotoxic lymphocytes. In another case, anti-IFN-gamma has also been used to reverse cancer cachexia.
