Description
(MPO) is a peroxidase enzyme most abundantly present in neutrophil granulocytes (a subtype of white blood cells). MPO is a lysosomal protein stored in azurophilic granules of the neutrophil. Myeloperoxidase has a heme pigment, which causes its green color in secretions rich in neutrophils, such as pus and some forms of mucus. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is increasingly being recognized as an important factor in many inflammatory diseases, particularly cardiovascular and neurological diseases. MPO-specific imaging agents would thus be highly useful to diagnose early disease, monitor disease progression, and quantify treatment effects.
