Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) is a glycoprotein produced by the liver and released into the bloodstream. SHBG is responsible for binding sex hormones, specifically testosterone and estradiol, thereby inhibiting their function by regulating bioavailability. SHBG is also produced in the brain, uterus, placenta, vagina, and testis. Testis specific SHBG is also called Androgen-Binding Protein (ABP).
