Description
Protease Nexin-1 (PN-1) is a serine protease inhibitor (serpin) protein (SERPINE2) that inhibits Plasminogen Activators (tPA and uPA), Plasmin, and Thrombin. It is evolutionarily related to Antithrombin and Heparin Cofactor II, therefore, possessing anticoagulant properties. PN-1 functions as an antithrombic by complex formations with its target proteases. It is expressed by platelets, and macrophage in the brain. Several inhibitors, all belonging to the serpin family have been implicated in the inhibition of Plasminogen Activator. In order of reaction rate constants these are: PAI1, PAI2, PN-1, and PAI3.
