The ED50 as determined by dose-dependent stimulationof the proliferation of IL-6 dependent murine 7TD1 cells is <0.02ng/ml, corresponding to a specific activity of >5 x 107units/mg. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a protein that in humans is encoded bythe IL6 gene. IL-6 is an interleukin that acts as both a pro-inflammatory andanti-inflammatory cytokine. It is secreted by T cells and macrophages tostimulate immune response, e.g. during infection and after trauma, especiallyburns or other tissue damage leading to inflammation. In terms of hostresponse to a foreign pathogen during infection, IL-6 has been shown, inmice, to be required for resistance against the bacterium, Streptococcuspneumoniae. IL-6 is also a myokine, a cytokine produced frommuscle, and is elevated in response to muscle contraction. It issignificantly elevated with exercise, and precedes the appearance of othercytokines in the circulation.
