ADAM9 protein is a member of the ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain) family containing membrane-anchored proteins structurally related to snake venom disintegrins. This family is involved in a variety of biological processes such as cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, including fertilization, muscle development, and neurogenesis. The structure of ADAM9 protein family contains a disintegrin domain, an EGF-like domain and a peptidase M12B domain. The ADAM9 protein interacts with SH3 domain-containing proteins, binds mitotic arrest deficient 2 beta protein, and is also involved in TPA-induced ectodomain shedding of membrane-anchored heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor. Two alternative splice variants of AMAP9 mRNA have been identified, encoding distinct isoforms.
