Casein Kinase II (CKII CK2 phosvitin kinase troponin T kinase casein kinase G) is a ubiquitous serine/threonine protein kinase that is highly conserved and commonly found in eukaryotic cells (found in the cytoplasm and the nucleus). CKII is a heterotetramer that consists of two catalytic subunits (alpha alpha-prime) and two regulatory beta subunits (1). CKII can utilize both GTP and ATP as the phosphate donor and phosphorylates threonine and serine residues. Therefore CKII is a multifunctional protein kinase with broad range of substrates (e. g. c-Myc c-Myb c-Fos c-Jun p53 Rb HPVE7) and it has been implicated in various cell functions/processes from cell transformation to mitosis.
