Immunogen:
Parainfluenza 3 haemagglutinin protein.
Specificity:
Specifically recognises an epitope within the haemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) protein of parainfluenza virus 3 (HPIV-3) an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus of the Paramyxoviridae family. Parainfluenza viruses are genetically and antigenically divided into the four types HPIV1-4 with HPIV-1 -2 and -3 being major causative agents of lower respiratory infections in the young and immunologically vulnerable. The HN protein of all HPIV is a 69-82kDa surface glycoprotein which mediates the attachment of the virus to the host cell through binding to cell surface sialic acid-containing receptors. The receptor-cleaving neuraminidase activity of HN is essential for further infection by HPIV by ensuring the release of progeny virions.
