Biothelis

Biothelis is a start-up company based in Lille, France. The company was able to develop and produce a diagnostic kit (EndoMark® H1A kit) that allows to predict the occurrence of severe respiratory distress. In view of the Covid 19 pandemic, it could be used to better monitor the condition of ICU patients, improve prognosis and optimize patient management.

Endocan

Endocan, also known as endothelial cell-specific molecule-1 or ESM-1 for short, is a soluble proteoglycan expressed by the vascular endothelium. Endocan expression is increased in inflammatory diseases as well as in the development of cancer. Cytokines such as TNF or IL-1 (proinflammatory) induce expression, whereas insulin and the interferon-gamma can inhibit expression.

Endocan has anti-inflammatory effects and is mainly expressed in highly perfused organs such as the lungs or kidneys. Furthermore, it has a proangiogenic property, as the growth of blood vessels by sprouting and fission processes. This process is important in embryogenesis and in wound healing. There is also pathological angiogenesis that occurs more in tumor growth, supplying the tumor with oxygen and nutrients. Moreover, it is suggested that tumor cell proliferation may be promoted by interaction between growth factors and endocan glycan. In contrast, angiogenesis is pathologically decreased in wound healing disorders.

Endocan is cleaved by cathepsin G. In healthy individuals, cleaved endocan cannot be detected in plasma or urine, but it can in severe septic disease. This reflects an active inflammatory process in the vascular system and may provide an additional indication of renal dysfunction, as Endocan is excreted urinary due to its small size.

Biothelis has products for research, including ELISA kits for dosing Endocan, recombinant proteins and anti-Endocan antibodies. The products are applicable to human, non-human and cleaved Endocan.
