CALIXAR was founded in January 2011 by Emmanuel Dejan, Pierre Falson (Research Director at the French National Research Center) and INP Entreprise as the first investor. The company is composed of a highly qualified team of 15 members, a large part of which are PhD students. Mission

CALIXAR's mission is to isolate high quality membrane protein targets/antigens from any biological material and stabilize the native proteins. Functional and high purity is the requirement for the membrane protein products. The products are made available to develop improved and more powerful drugs and vaccines.

Applications

New technologies and approaches enable deorphanization, which means that an endogenous ligand has been identified from an "orphan receptor" and is therefore no longer considered "orphan". Thus, new target molecules and antigens can be isolated and used for a variety of applications such as vaccine development, high-throughput ligand screening, structure-based drug discovery, assays and immunoassays.

Technologies

CALIXAR has been able to establish a patented technological platform that enables the isolation of full-length functional native membrane proteins in native structural condition.

With the scientists' expertise in the biochemistry of integral membrane proteins (IMPs) and chemical knowledge of stabilization reagents, the foundation is in place to match the chemical environment to the membrane proteins rather than the other way around.

In conventional approaches, the latter results in proteins and biological structures adapting to the environment through point mutations or deletions. The altered sequence can lead to structural and conformational changes, significantly affecting the quality and functionality of the biomolecules. The preservation of the functional and structural integrities of the targets/antigens thus further serves the success of applications in drug discovery.
