Viral expression

Another core competence of the American life science company are kits and reagents for viral expression and purification. Recombinant viruses are excellent tools for introducing genetic material into host cells. The infection and replication mechanisms are virus-specific. Adenoviruses can infect a wide variety of mammalian cell types with high efficiency. They remain epichromosal in the event of infection and are therefore only suitable for temporary expression.

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is less immunogenic because random insertions are rare. It integrates at specific locations on the human chromosome in the host cell. Retroviruses (e.g. MMLV) introduce genetic material into the genome of the host cell and thus ensure long-term stable expression. The retroviral titer is typically lower than that of the adenovirus. As a subclass of the retroviruses, lentiviruses (e.g. HIV-1, FIV, SIV) are used for both transient and stable gene expression. They can infect both proliferating and non proliferating cells.
