ProAxsis Limited from Northern Ireland manufactures a range of assay kits designed to specifically measure active protease biomarkers for disease. The diagnostics company's customers include pharmaceutical companies and academic laboratories. ProAxsis is a subsidiary of NetScientific, the established manufacturer of transformative biomedical and health technologies.

ProAxsis' easy-to-use tests include patented ProteaseTags. These are intelligent molecules that capture an active protease in a complex biological sample and enable visual reading of its presence. The binding is quick and selective. The molecules targeted by the technology can be biomarkers of diagnostic and prognostic value. Visual readout of the active proteases takes place even in complex samples with a high degree of specificity and selectivity. For diseases that are characterized by abnormal protease effects, ProteaseTag test systems can be integrated into point-of-care tests, companion diagnostics and activity-based immunoassays. They can be used as tools to detect and quantify the activity of a single protease species within a complex biological sample.

ProAxsis Limited holds a CE mark for activity-based immunoassays against neutrophil elastase (NE) and proteinase 3 as biomarkers for lung infections and inflammation in chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD, cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis. This technology has been translated into a point-of-care test (NEATstik) to enable continuous monitoring of the active NE values. NE is a promising biomarker for stratifying disease severity. Measuring active NE levels with NEATstik can identify patients with bacterial respiratory infections and those at highest risk of pulmonary exacerbations in the following 12 months. NEATstik is a highly sensitive and specific device for lateral flow, the rapid detection of active NE in sputum. In addition to proteases, ProAxsis also has extensive experience in measuring other inflammatory biomarkers, including IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-alpha.

In addition to providing assays, ProAxsis can offer sample analyzes in its own laboratory and currently supports a number of phase I, II and III clinical trials sponsored by pharmaceutical companies.
