The encoded protein is responsible for theuptake of iodine in tissues such as the thyroid and lactatingbreast tissue. The iodine taken up by the thyroid is incorporatedinto the metabolic regulators triiodothyronine (T3) andtetraiodothyronine (T4). Mutations in this gene are associated withthyroid dyshormonogenesis 1.
