Description
Bird flu (also called Avian flu or Avian influenza) is an influenza caused by viruses adapted to birds. All viruses known to cause influenza in birds belong to Influenza A virus. The virus usually do not infect human and the risk is low, however there are some cases reported that human infection had occurred since 1997. The virus lives in the intestine of wild birds and do not make them sick. However, it is very contagious among birds and can affect domesticated birds such as, chickens, ducks, and turkeys. The virus can make those birds very sick and might eventually even kill them. The virus in infected birds stays in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. There are two types of infections, low and high. The low infection will cause mild symptoms such as ruffled feathers and a drop in egg production. The high infection will spread more rapidly; it can damage multiple internal organs and has a very high mortality rate of 90-100% within 48hrs.
There are many different subtypes of type A influenza viruses. They are classified by depending on the protein that lay down on its surface. The two main proteins are hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) protein. There are 16 known HA subtypes and 9 known NA subtypes, using combinations of HA and NA subtypes can form various different subtypes. If the virus enters the human body it can cause the following symptoms; fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, eye infections, pneumonia, severe respiratory diseases and other severe life-threatening complications.

The name of the virus that have been infecting human is called H5N1. It is deadly within birds and rarely contagious to human. However, some extreme cases have been reported and human could get infected if had direct or close contact with infected poultry or contaminated surfaces. In the mid of 2003 the largest and most severe outbreak among birds had occurred in South-East Asia. This ended resulting in death or destruction of an estimate of 150 million birds. Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Thailand and Lao People’s Democratic Republic have considered the virus an endemic problem. Even though there are cases reported of infected humans with H5N1 virus they are cases transmitted from birds to human. There are no cases involving human to human infection. Epidemiologists are concern that the next mutation of the virus can lead to the human to human infection, which could turn into a pandemic problem.
