Description: Syrosingopine (Su-3118), a drug derived from reserpine, is a potent antihypertensive agent that has been found to potentiate the anticancer activity of widely used diabetic drug metformin by sensitizing cancer cells to metformin. Syrosingopine is an inhibitor of the vesicular monoamine transporters. Syrosingopine binds to the glycolytic enzyme a-enolase in vitro, and the expression of the g-enolase isoform correlates with nonresponsiveness to the drug combination. Syrosingopine sensitized cancer cells to metformin and its more potent derivative phenformin far below the individual toxic threshold of each compound.
