It is neurosteroid and a key precursor that is involved in the steroidogenesis of a variety of steroids including progesterone, glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, androgens, and estrogens, making it a prohormone. It has been observed to inhibit GABA-gated chloride currents by enhancing receptor desensitization.
