HDACs remove the acetyl group from lysine residues of histones and other cellular proteins. HDACs are classified into four phylogenetic groups: class I (HDACl, HDAC2, HDAC3 and HDAC8), class II (HDAC4, HDAC5, HDAC7 and HDAC9 in the class Ila subgroup, and HDAC6 and HDAC10 in the lib subgroup), class III (Sirtl-Sirt7) and class IV (HDACl 1).
