Tramadol, a centrally-acting analgesic opioid, is commonly prescribed for themanagement of moderate to moderately severe pain. Tramadol exerts its analgesiceffects through a dual mechanism of action: it binds to mu-opioid receptors and inhibitsserotonin and norepinephrine reuptake. This unique combination makes tramadoleffective in addressing both nociceptive and neuropathic pain. In 2014 it was listed as aClass IV drug by the FDA due to its high potential for misuse and abuse, particularly inindividuals with a history of substance abuse.
