Background
Noggin, also known as NOG, is a protein which in humans is encoded by the NOG gene which maps to chromosome 17q22. Noggin binds and inactivates members of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily signaling proteins, such as bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP4). By diffusing through extracellular matrices more efficiently than members of the TGF-b superfamily, noggin may have a principal role in creating morphogenic gradients. It plays a key role in neural induction by inhibiting BMP4, along with other TGF-b signaling inhibitors such as chord in and follistatin.
