Description
Human apo-SAA is a 104-amino acid polypeptide which is synthesized in the liver and circulates primarily in association with high-density lipoproteins (HDLs). Under conditions of inflammatory stimulus, the level of apo-SAA increases as much as 1000-fold within a 24-hour period, making it the most abundant HDL. Although the physiological role of apo-SAA remains largely unknown, it appears to play a significant role in inflammation and in certain coronary diseases.
