Background	Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is an intermediate filament (IF) protein with a molecular weight of 51 kDa that was thought to be specific for astrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS). Later, it was shown that GFAP is also expressed by other cell types in CNS, including ependymal cells, Schwann cells and enteric glia cells. GFAP functions remain to be understood in astrocytes and need further studies. However, it is a very important marker to distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells during development.
