Background	trkA is a protein encoded by the NTRK1 gene. The trkA kinase is a high affinity membrane bound receptor for Nerve Growth Factor, that phosphorylates itself and members of the MAPK pathway when a neurotrophin binds. It's presence leads to cell differentiation and specificity of sensory neuron subtypes. Mutations of this gene lead to self-mutilating behavior, mental retardation, and cancer.
