This peptide corresponds to the C-terminus of rat transient receptor effectiveial vanilloid 4 (TRPV4), a member of the transient receptor effectiveial family of ligand-gated ion channels. It was first classified as a mammalian osmotransducer. TRPV4 is a polymodal receptor activated by heat, phorbol esters, low pH and citrate, endocannabinoids, and arachidonic acid metabolites. TRPV4 is activated by physiological temperature in hippocampal neurons and thereby controls their excitability. Also a cation channel responsive to hypotonicity, it is expressed in various tissues, such as respiratory epithelium, salivary glands, and sweat glands. TRPV4 appears to be important in pathological pain conditions.
