Ceramics, inorganic and non-metallic biomaterials, are increasingly coming into scientific focus. Their unique physical and chemical properties enable highly customizable designs in terms of composition, structure, mechanical and biological properties. Ceramics are characterized by high biocompatibility and high corrosion resistance, as well as compatibility with high pressure forces. They are electrical and heat-insulating and enable a wide range of applications in dentistry, orthopedics and diagnostics. For example, hydroxylapatite (HA) is becoming a popular biomaterial due to its similarity to bone tissue (which is mainly calcium phosphate).

One of the main research areas of our partner Matexcel are antimicrobial materials. In the medical field, bacterial colonization of medical devices, including surgical devices, implants and other healthcare products, poses serious risks to public health. Requirements for qualified materials include that microbial growth on surface or in the environment is destroyed or inhibited with superior effectiveness, low toxicity and minimization of environmental problems. The development of materials and devices with antimicrobial properties has therefore started by adding antibiotics to the material or by applying antimicrobial coatings. A variety of materials have antimicrobial properties: Silver has long been used as an effective antimicrobial material in numerous formulations that, at certain concentrations, show no toxicity to human cells. Copper and its alloys (brass, bronze, cupronickel, copper-nickel-zinc and others) are innovative and natural antimicrobial materials with intrinsic properties to destroy a large number of microorganisms.

Antimicrobial polymers have emerged as promising candidates against microbial contamination. Their versatile macromolecular chemistry makes it easier to adapt the physicochemical properties of polymers for various applications in the biomedical field. Polymer materials such as chitosan and bioactive glasses are also intrinsically antibacterial materials. The surface coating or the deposition of an antibacterial material on the substrate surfaces is one of the most frequently used methods. Matexcel offers various types of materials with antimicrobial properties, such as antimicrobial powder, antimicrobial masterbatches, fibers and even some antimicrobial building materials.
