MicroGem – Enzymatic thermostable DNA and RNA extractions

MicroGem is committed to DNA and RNA extraction and is setting new standards in this area with an enzymatic approach. More complex molecular techniques are being shifted away from the laboratory to environments so that they can be applied to very specific biological problems. The fast diagnosis function can be used in a variety of ways: From the detection of the cassava mosaic virus in harvest fields to the diagnosis and analysis of water pathogens in the deep sea.

The name MicroGem is made up of the microfluid expertise of our partner (Micro) and GEM for genes, enzymes and microbes. The limiting step of a DNA or RNA analysis often lies in isolation of nucleic acids. MicroGem approaches this extraction with an innovative new method: The traditional methods are replaced by a simple single-tube approach. The special formulas of the cocktails consisting of thermophilic and mesophilic enzymes and buffers work at different temperatures and generate coordinated temperature-controlled reactions. Single-tube protocols isolate and stabilize nucleic acids without harsh chemicals or multiple steps. Where conventional methods take a few hours, this protocol only takes a few minutes. In addition to the obvious time advantage, MicroGem's approach offers high yield, high quality and reduced contamination.

The EA1 Erebus Antarcitca 1 proteinase comes from a hydrothermal vent high on the slopes of an active Antarctic volcano. It is inactive at low temperatures, activated at 75 °C and irreversibly denaturing proteins at 95 °C. High temperatures mean that the enzyme works without detergents or denaturants and only uses heat to lyse cells and break down nucleoproteins and nucleases. These properties make them the heart of MicroGem reagent kits. These produce high-quality nucleic acids capable of STR, PCR and qPCR from sample types that range from tissue, cell culture, insects and sperm to bacteria, plants, fungi and other sample types.

The temperature-controlled enzymatic approach to nucleic acid extraction is the first step that enables fast sample preparation for downstream analysis. At MicroGem, this fast extraction capability is combined with microfluidic know-how to develop next generation point-of-need solutions.
