TNF alpha (tumor necrosis factor alpha), also known as cachectin produced by macrophages, NK cells, and T- and B-lymphocytes. TNF alpha is a cytokine involved in systemic inflammation. The primary role of TNF alpha is in the regulation of immune cells. TNF alpha is able to induce apoptotic cell death and inflammation, and to inhibit tumorigenesis and viral replication. Dysregulation of TNF alpha has been implicated in a variety of human diseases, including cancer, autoimmune disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and atherosclerosis.
